Dublin Accord (two-year NZDE) or equivalence

Two ways to choose to become a CPEng: Membership or Registration:
There are two ways to become a Chartered Professional Engineer. The first one is though Engineering New Zealand membership is a Chartered Member (CMEngNZ). The second one is through registration as a Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng).
The Chartered Member class offers a general quality mark of professionalism with all the membership benefits.
CPEng registration gives a mark of current competency that is based on legislation. If you want to be both a Chartered Member and CPEng, then you can. Even if you want to be one, then you can also be that. All is up to your choice.
Difference between CPEng (registration) and Chartered Membership (CMEngNZ)
Chartered member:
- Quality mark of general competence and professionalism
- Engineering New Zealand membership benefits
- Evaluated once, with a yearly commitment to ongoing professional development and ethics
- Evaluates general engineering competence to a globally-recognized standard
- Basis capability of international registers (IntPE, IntET, IntETn)
Registration:
- Quality mark of current New Zealand-specific competency
- Independent of Engineering New Zealand and have governance under CPEng Act 2002
- Re-evaluated a minimum of every six years
- Evaluates general engineering competence to a globally-recognized standard with current New Zealand-specific competency
- It may be necessary, dependent on your employer or type of work
Charges and fees (excluding GST):
Chartered evaluation $1,565.00
Knowledge assessment $1,175.00 (necessary if you apply for Chartered Member without a Washington Accord-recognized qualification or accredited equivalent)
Yearly feel $525.00
If joining part-way through the financial year (1 October to 30 September), the annual fee is pro-rated monthly. When your membership comes up for renewal on 1 October, the authority will send an invoice for the new financial year.
If you are retired or on a career break, you can request a discounted rate on your yearly fee.
Registration reassessment:
If you are on a career break when your next CPEng assessment is due, rely on the work you did since your last assessment. Furthermore, the work you undertook during the last 6 years can work as proof of your current competency.
You have to give your full CPD records from this time. Besides that, give a summary of any steps you took to maintain your professional engagement in your discipline.
Your assessment panel will consider the length of time you have been out of the workforce. They will do so when recommending the period until your next assessment.
How to maintain your membership when you are away:
If requiring a career break, you can easily keep your Engineering New Zealand and pay a discounted fee. By doing so, you will continue to get the membership magazine and email newsletters. In addition to that, you will also stay in touch with your branch.
When you are on your break, you will still have access to the member area online. You don’t need to do a particular amount of continuing professional development (CPD) when not working.
